These six poems shows the situation of the soldiers and people in that time will be presented and figurative language which serves the main idea of them what will be described.
"How should you leave me, having loved me so?"
The writer in this poem uses imagery and repetation to say whats in the poem.
The big idea of this poem is that the girl can't see his face but only his khaki uniform. The first stanza is about that the girl thinks that the boy is dead and she can't remember him. The poem has these metaphors for describeing him "brown abd tall, strong and living". The second stanza's idea is that she can't belive that his dead and she do things what they did together.
"O sir, my eyes- I'm blind - I'm blind, I'm blind!"
This poem is about that how brutal nightmare was the war and to show this the writer uses imagery, metaphor, alliteration and also onomatopoelia.
This poem is about that how brutal nightmare was the war and to show this the writer uses imagery, metaphor, alliteration and also onomatopoelia.
In the first stanza the poem tells us where is it set. This qoute from the poem "Shrinks of death" shows that it was as horrible as death.
The second stanza is using stronger words which makes your mind think first about never ending nightmare.
The third stanza is is about people having hope that they are going to survive but at the and sadly as the poem says "light dies out".
"If I should die, think only this of me."
This introduces to the readers the life of a soldier while the WW1 was happening. The Soldier by Rupert Brooke tells us the glory story of dying for your country is heroic.
In the poem the writer uses repetition and personification to focus on the positive and patriotic soul of the soldiers in the war.
The writor repeats English and England six times in his work.
By repeating these words again and again highlights the close ralitionship between him and his country. He compares England to heaven.
He is ready to die for his country as it represents the woman of his dreams.
"Oh Jesus make it stop!"
This poem uses imagery and metaphors to serve the big idea which is that the situation is hopeless and the men are desperate.
"The barrage roars and lifts " this is an example of auditory sound imagery. The site in imagery is best example lifted by "lines of grey masked with fear" and "hope, with furtive eyes and grappling fists" these show that the soilders were afraid. We can easily imagine the men looking for something they have no hope of finding. The writer used imagery and metaphor very effectively to give the reader tha message about the soldiers who are hopeless and desperate.
"Passing through this gate"
Sassoon who is the writer of this poem uses metaphors, listing and repetation to tell the reader what's the big idea which is that who will remember them because people will just walk away and won't remember their names.
"Who will remember, passing through this Gate, the unheroic dead who fed the guns?" This quote show that who will remember them and "unheroic" here means the soilders who went but didn't return.
The writer wants their names to be remembered so he writes "Their names liveth forever" he also uses metaphors for example "the sullen swamps and dead who struggeled in the slime" this leads to the soilders.
"It is sweet and glorious to die for one's country"
Dying for your country it's heroic now and it always was and will be and this persaude men to fight in war for their country.
Thus poem uses imagery of site, smell and hearing to say that being killed and killing is not sweet and heroic.
The descriptive examples of a soldier dying in "I saw him drowning" and "He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning" makes you feel you were these yourself.
From this poem which describes the war scene in a good details makes you realise the brutality of the war and makes you wonder about the glory of dying.
The big idea in this poem is in the last stanza.
Overall these poems shows the brutality tragedy and horrors of WW1 what we shouldn't forget foerever. Some poems for example The Sentry, Attack, On Passing the New Main Gate, The Effect, The Wind of Downs and Dulce et decorum est have shown by using metaphors, imagery, repetation that how hopeless the situation was that time.
