This poem uses imagery and metaphors to serve the big idea which is that the situation is hopeless and the men are desperate.
"The barrage roars and lifts " this is an example of auditory sound imagery. The site in imagery is best example lifted by "lines of grey masked with fear" and "hope, with furtive eyes and grappling fists" these show that the soilders were afraid. We can easily imagine the men looking for something they have no hope of finding. The writer used imagery and metaphor very effectively to give the reader tha message about the soldiers who are hopeless and desperate.
